How To Administer Eye Drops

Putting in Eye Drops

  1. Wash your hands prior to caring for your eye
  2. Clean your eyelids prior to administering your drops
  3. Moisten a cotton ball slightly with lukewarm water, close your eye and wipe from the inside corner to the outside corner (from nose to temple)
  4. Repeat if necessary with a new cotton ball
  5. Sit or lie down to apply the drops
  6. Remove the lid and place it on a clean surface
  7. Create a “pocket” in front of the eye by pulling down on the lower lid with an index finger or by gently pinching the lower lid outward with the thumb and index finger.
  8. Squeeze one drop in without touching the eye or eyelashes, and close your eye gently.
  9. If your doctor has given you more than one drop, please wait 5 minutes before applying the next one.

Eye Ointment

  1. Wash your hands prior to caring for your eye
  2. Clean your eyelids prior to administering your drops
  3. Moisten a cotton ball slightly with lukewarm water, close your eye and wipe from the inside corner to the outside corner (from nose to temple)
  4. Repeat if necessary with a new cotton ball
  5. Sit or lie down to apply the drops
  6. Remove the lid and place it on a clean surface
  7. Create a “pocket” in front of the eye by pulling down on the lower lid with an index finger or by gently pinching the lower lid outward with the thumb and index finger.
  8. Gently squeeze the ointment tube and apply about one inch of ointment into the eyelid pocket.
  9. With a tissue, gently wipe any excess ointment from the lid and eyelashes.
  10. Replace and tighten the cap right away.
